Robert L. Freedman has had an eclectic career in television and film, writing in many genres, including comedy, drama, musicals, biography, mystery and true crime. Robert has written original stories, true stories based on real incidents, and adaptations of novels and non-fiction. He has tackled many controversial subjects, including racism, civil rights, gay rights, mental illness, child neglect, alcoholism, teenage suicide, Vietnam MIA's, and mothers in prison, among others.
For his work in television, Robert has received a Writers Guild Award, and two other WGA nominations, been nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe, was a finalist for the Humanitas Prize, received a Television Critics Association Award, a Broadcast Critics Award, an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of Amerida, and a Silver Plaque at the Chicago International Television Festival.
For film, Robert has written screenplays for producers including Martin Bregman, Leonard Goldberg, Edward Pressman, David Friendly, Geena Davis, Robert Stigwood and Roger Corman. In television, Robert has worked with producers and directors including Gerald Abrams, Robert Alan Ackerman, Gail Berman, Jeff Bleckner, Susan Cartsonis, Suzanne DePasse, Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Halmi, Ann Hassett, Jaffe-Braunstein, Glenn Jordan, Mimi Leder, Robert Niemack, Bonnie Raskin, Arnold Rifkin, Norman and David Rosemont, Barbra Streisand, Marlo Thomas, Lawrence Turman, Von Zerneck-Sertner, Dan Wigutow, Matt Williams, Rita Wilson, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, among others.
Robert has written for a variety of talented actors, including Jason Alexander, Angela Bassett, Ellen Burstyn, Drew Carey, Keith Carradine, Carol Channing, Judy Davis, Olivia De Havilland, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Patty Duke, Victor Garber, Annabeth Gish, Sharon Gless, Whoopi Goldberg, Harry Hamlin, Edward Herrmann, Angela Lansbury, Jack Lemmon, Marsha Mason, Reba McEntire, Kelly McGillis, Dolly Parton, Bernadette Peters, Chita Rivera, Jean Smart, Peter Strauss and Richard Thomas, among others.
In addition to his many movies and mini-series (see Credits), Robert has written five one-hour drama pilots for television: BIG SKY (NBC), BRAVO COMPANY (ABC), NORMAN ROCKWELL'S AMERICA (CBS), LIBERTY (FOX), and THE FORT (20th).
His most recent television scripts include the highly-rated MURDER IN THE HAMPTONS (premiered on Lifetime-TV July 11, 2005), ANOTHER CITY, NOT MY OWN, adapted from the book by Dominick Dunne; KINDERGARTEN WARS, a comedy about a couple trying to get their child into private school; and FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS, about Bette Davis. Robert's most recent feature scripts include KID LAWYER (working title), based on an article in the New York Times Magazine; and THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, based on Frank Loesser's Broadway musical. Robert is currently writing AGE OF CONSENT, about a high school teacher who had sex with a student, and FULL CIRCLE FAMILY, about teenage pregnancy, for Lifetime Television.
